Fatty Acid Group (F.A.G.) – a specific group of essential fatty acids like Palmitic acid, Oleic acid, Stearic acid, Linoleic acid and Azelaic acid. Up to 9 fatty acids may be combined to produce the correct balance to support the skin.
Immune cells in the skin (e.g. mast cells) release biological mediators that trigger inflammation (redness, swelling and pain) and stimulate the nerve pathways, causing itch.
Inflammation is normally a short-lived, helpful and natural part of the body’s defence system. However, with radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatment, the mast cell becomes over stimulated and releases all its damaging contents at the same time. This amplifies the harm caused to the skin.
Fatty acids give each immune cell in the skin the biological material it needs to be able to produce its own down-regulators of inflammation. Research continues to grow about the important role that essential fatty acids play in the skin immune system. The MosaicLife products take advantage of this latest research into the biology of the skin.
Aloe vera is thought to play a role in binding moisture to skin . In pure form, aloe vera’s benefits on skin are probably its lack of occlusion and the refreshing sensation it provides. Aloe serves as a water-binding agent for skin due to its polysaccharide (complex carbohydrate) and sterol content. Research has shown aloe also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial qualities.
The evidence for aloe vera (Aloe barbadenis) is inconsistent in radiation-induced skin damage. An article in the British Journal of General Practice (October 1999, pages 823–828) stated that “Topical application of aloe vera is not an effective preventative for radiation-induced injuries…. Whether it promotes wound healing is unclear”. Research indicates that components of aloe vera, such as glycoprotein, can have some effectiveness for wound healing and as an anti-irritant [2-4]

In addition, liquorice root contains constituents that work to interrupt the stimulation of an enzyme that activates melanin production, so this part of the plant can be effective for improving dark spots and hyper-pigmentation.

It is an ester of cetearyl alcohol and the fatty acids derived from olive oil.

Ethyl Linoleate (EL) is a neutral, lipid-soluble form of Linoleic acid (LA). Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid needed for skin nourishment. EL is reported to accelerate the healing of wounds & clinically proven to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent. [Brit J Dermatol, 157(3):569-574, 2007].
LA improves epidermal barrier function as well as reduces redness and scaling of the skin. Also, LA corrects sebum imbalance [Int J Dermatol, 43:701-702, 2004]. LA lightens UV-induced skin pigmentation [Arch Dermatol Res, 290:375-381, 1998].
Glycerin attracts water to skin and helps skin to feel smoother and softer.
Studies have found that it not only attracts water to the skin, but also helps skin cells mature properly. Glycerin works as a signal to help direct skin cells through their four normal stages of maturity. In the endless cycle of skin-cell production, the youngest cells move up from the deepest layer and switch from replicating as their main function to eventually becoming mature surface cells that spit out lipids to help form the skin’s protective barrier.
When you don’t have enough glycerol in the skin, cells don’t mature properly and is one of the causes of thick skin.
Glycine Soja (Soy) is a natural emollient and moisturiser. It contains significant amounts of all the essential amino acids and is a good source of protein. It is derived from Soybean Amino Acids and is rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, especially Vitamin E. It is commonly used for skin conditioning and skin firming.
So why do you need it?
Your skin’s dermis layer is made up of about 70% water and claims nearly 50% of your body’s total HA allotment; there it helps to support and hydrate the skin. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be very hard on the skin. Many chemotherapies are well known to cause dry skin.
Dry skin also leads to wrinkly, flappy skin. Wrinkles come about from the loss of three important components in the skin: collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. HA provides the hydrating, nutrient-transporting framework necessary for holding up the structure of the extra cellular membrane in the skin.
What is Sodium Hyaluronate?
Sodium hyaluronate has a smaller molecular size than HA (making it especially penetrative), and is able to hold more water than any other natural substance—up to 1,000 times its weight in water! Topically adding sodium hyaluronate transforms the dermis layer of your skin into a super-sponge.
When applied topically to the skin it can reach deep down into the dermis to combine with, maintain and attract water. It also promotes skin/blood microcirculation and nutrient absorption, and helps maintain normal metabolism. Thanks to its super-sized hydrating properties, sodium hyaluronate will result in smoother and softer skin. On top of that, it reduces any sort of trans-epidermal water loss.
In a nut-shell during treatment, it is essential to keep your skin in as healthy a condition as you can. Products containing hyaluronic acid have been proved in clinical studies to support good skin conditioning.
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a body-own fatty acid compound, and is produced by our own living cells to restore balance in chronic pain and chronic inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties have been established over many decades since its first discovery in 1957.
In 1993, the Nobel price winner for medicine, Professor Rita Levi-Montalcini, pointed out the relevance of PEA for medicine and since then more than 300 scientific papers on PEA have been published.
To date around 5000 patients have been entered in double-blind clinical trials, and the efficacy in chronic pain and inflammation of this natural compound is clearly documented. This makes PEA one of the best documented, effective and safe nutraceuticals. Sadly not enough pain physicians read literature on supplements, and seem to believe that only pharmaceuticals can be effective. At the 8th European congress on Pain (EFIC) in Florence, 2013 palmitoylethanolamide was presented in one of the main symposia as a new kid on the block. We hope this will help to open the eyes of doctors that patients can also be helped with natural compounds, without side effects….
All MosaicLife products contain PEA
PEA also has the chemical name n- (2-hydroxyethyl)hexadecanamide.
Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter) is a botanical ingredient derived from the seeds of the African Shea Tree. Shea butter acts as a skin conditioning agent and viscosity (thickness) increasing agent.
It helps retain moisture and lessen the loss of water by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface. It also works to reduce the appearance of rough patches and dry flakes on the skin.
In addition, the moisturisers in shea butter are the same as those produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin. In fact, because its structure and function resembles that of the lipid content of skin, shea butter is considered to be a Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). As an NMF, it helps keep the intercellular structure of the epidermis intact, and effectively keeps bacteria out, facilitates the skin’s healing process, prevents irritation and regenerates the skin.

Tocopheryl Acetate is a form of Vitamin E, a natural skin-conditioning agent and antioxidant. It is the ester of Acetic Acid and Tocopherol and is often used as an alternative to pure Tocopherol (or undiluted Vitamin E) because it is considered more stable and less acidic. As an antioxidant superstar, Vitamin E is one of the most well-researched antioxidants.
Tocopheryl Acetate is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be isolated from vegetable oils. It is also found in dairy products, meat, eggs, cereals, nuts, and leafy green and yellow vegetables.
Its substantiated benefits include promoting the healing process, strengthening the skin’s barrier function, protecting the skin barrier’s lipid balance, and reducing transepidermal water loss.
Attributed with antioxidant, anti-aging, moisturising, anti-inflammatory, and enhanced SPF properties, Tocopherol Acetate is valued both as a dietary supplement and skincare active.
